MCLS Invites Youth to Shape the Future

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Library System is giving teens a chance for their voice to be heard.

The Teen Advisory Board will be meeting this Tuesday, Jan. 28th, from 2:30 to 3:30PM at the Dresden Branch.

Alyssa Fisher, the Assistant Teen Librarian, said this is a space where teens can learn to use their voice and advocate for things they want to see in the Library. She said the current project “TAB” has been working on is deciding what to put in the new Maker’s Space that will be going in the Dresden location.

“We realize that teens are at that point in life where they don’t always feel like they’re heard and they’re trying to find their own identity,” Fisher said. “So the Library wants to help facilitate that, we want to give them a chance to express themselves, to tell us what they would like for the Library to provide for them.”

Fisher said this gives teens an opportunity to meet others around their age and also learn how to share their own ideas in a group setting. The reason they moved the Teen Advisory Board to the Dresden Branch is due to the current renovations happening at the John McIntire Library.

Fisher hopes this will inspire more teens to get out and make their thoughts a reality at the library.

“Not only is it a great opportunity for them to share their ideas but it’s a great opportunity for them to build leadership skills,” Fisher explained. “And be able to become the leaders in the community that they would like to be.”
