MCLS Summer Reading Challenge Wraps Up this Week

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Library System’s annual Summer Reading Challenge is coming to a close.

But don’t fear, you still have until Thursday, July 31st, to log any minutes or books you might have forgotten about.

Sean Fennell, the Marketing and Community Relations Director with MCLS, said if you didn’t register at the start of summer reading but still read some throughout the challenge time, you can still go back and log your minutes.

“What that means is that if you haven’t registered for Summer Reading but you’ve done reading throughout the months of June or July, you can register all the way up through Thursday,” Fennell said. “And still get all of your raffle tickets and come in and get all of your prizes as well, so there’s still time to participate in Summer Reading to get all the cool incentive prizes out there.”

Fennell was able to provide some numbers before the final total is revealed at the end of summer reading.

He said here in Muskingum County there were about 1,500 active participants and 23,000 books were read for a total of 2.6 Million minutes.

Fennell said his favorite part of Summer Reading isn’t captured in the numbers, it’s in the moments they get to experience at the Library.

“There was just a family of at least 5 or 6 people, out, just waiting for the Library to open and come in and have fun and look for the bingo for summer reading and just have a great time,” Fennell said. “And that is just an incredibly wonderful thing to see, when a family is just excited and ready to go for reading and literacy and just can’t wait for the library to open. It’s a wonderful thing to see those moments and I encourage everyone to come down because there is nothing cuter than watching a little kid hunt around the library for Library Bingo, it’s pretty adorable.”

If you’d like to register for Summer Reading, you can do so until Thursday by heading to the Library’s website.
