ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Literacy is a term that means competence or knowledge of a specific subject.

Muskingum County Library System Adult Services Manager Suzanne Helms discussed an upcoming event that aims to promote food, health and gardening literacy.

“This Saturday is opening day down at Restoration Park,” Helms said. “So it’s the first chance community members have to get in there. They can clean out the raised beds and get things started for their community gardens this year. And our goal through our partnership with Muskingum Soil and Water is to help people not only learn more about what they’re growing but how to use it once it has all grown and come to fruition.”

The library will utilize its Charlie Cart, which is a mobile kitchen that was obtained with a grant from the United Way, to showcase how garden grown foods can be prepared for eating.

“So the focus this Saturday at our kickoff party is going to be a salsa garden. We’re going to have the foods available to show people how to make salsa using our Charlie Cart and then Soil and Water has a plan to help people get those gardens organized. The rising cost of groceries, we’re trying to help people offset that. It’s a wonderful community opportunity that the gardens exist and that people have this advantage that they can use, this public land and we’re really excited to be a part of that.”

The event will be held at the Restoration Park Community Garden on Muskingum Avenue from 1-to-3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, is open to the public and will focus on salsa ingredients such as peppers, and tomatoes.
