Meet the Many Furry Faces Currently at the Animal Shelter Society

Many faces of the Animal Shelter Society

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Animal Shelter Society here in Zanesville sees a lot of furry friends come through their doors and this week they’re highlighting the different breeds they have under their roof.

There’s Mikki the cattle dog, Australian red heeler, and terrier mix who’s around 7-months-old. Then there’s Saint and Raider who are both schnauzer/cattle dog Australian blue heelers that are about 4-months-old.

Next up is Buster, the 1-year-old American pit bull that tries to befriend every person and dog he comes across. Then there’s Weasel, who’s a 5-month-old elkhound, Australian, Norwegian shepherd mix.  Finally there’s also a bonded pair of brothers named Gunner and Dexter who are 6-year-old Australian Shepherd, poodle mixes.

April Gibson, the Executive Director, says a common misconception they hear is they only have pit bulls or terrier mixes available for adoption and that’s not the case.

“So it just kind of gives you just the wide variety we have.” Gibson said. “You know we’ve heard several times, say, the only thing at the Animal Shelter has is pit bulls, well, first of all there’s nothing wrong with that because those can be some of the best dogs you’ll ever see. But we only actually have 2 pitties, Buster and Ruger, we just have a variety.”

Gibson says there has also been a schedule change for their upcoming Music for Mutts fundraiser.

She says it was originally scheduled for October 1st, but they are moving it to October 7th, due to a new restaurant’s grand opening.

“We didn’t want to step on any toes or anything. The Prime Downtown has their opening night, we’re very respectful of those folks.” Gibson said. “They do an amazing thing, just not with that restaurant and at their store but they do a lot with non-profits so we did change that up, we’re going to do it the following Tuesday.”

The Shelter is open on Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 9AM to 3PM, closed Sunday and Tuesday for deep cleaning.
