Mid-East to Compete in SkillsUSA Nationals

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Mid-East Career and Technical Center Zanesville Campus offers many programs to high school students who are seeking to enter a vocational occupation.

Each spring, vocational students from around the state travel to Columbus to showcase their skill sets in a judged competition with the winner advancing to the nationals.

“SkillsUSA is a national competition where you show off your skills that you have and you go and compete against everyone around the country,” Mid-East Digital Media Student Kamryn Love said.

“So going to state was just a really great experience,” Mid-East Digital Media Student Cierra Gensley added. “It got you kind of a gist of what it would be like out in the actual field of work that you do. It’s a very professional environment and it is just a super great and fun experience all around.”

This year Mid-East had three programs: Food Service Operations, Cosmetology, and Digital Media Production, that won the state and will compete next month in Atlanta, Georgia at the nationals.

“I trained a lot and then I worked really hard for it. We did two haircuts at the competition and an updo, which is not like a typical updo. It’s a lot about balance and proportion and then we had a mock phone call of like what you would do in a salon,” Mid-East Cosmetology Student Alyvia Hinkle said.

“I’m really excited about going to nationals because it’s in Atlanta, Georgia and I’ve never been there before. I’ve never got to experience all that stuff and we’re flying a plane. So that’s really cool,” Mid-East Restaurant & Food Service Operations Student Priscilla Garrett said.

More than 600 students attended the state competition back in April and more than 6,000 students will compete in the nationals to be held June 24th through the 28th.

Laikyn Clark, Mackenzie Krenisky, Haylee McNeish of the Mid-East Buffalo Campus Graphic Art and Design program will also travel to the nationals as they won their competition in the Ohio SkillsUSA state championships as well.
