ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Mid-Ohio Foodbank kicked off their monthly produce market this morning at West Muskingum High School.

As members of the community lined up to receive fresh produce, local students filled the halls to help assist with the process.

“We thought we’d start the month out by doing a huge community service project with our 4-H Club. All of the members of out 4-h club also attend West Muskingum so we just thought it would be a great way to give back to their classmates, maybe potentially their teachers, faculty, their friends or whoever may be sitting next to them in class and showing them. Let’s teach kids to be a productive member of their community,” said Erin Serdy, Valley View Adviser.

Although receiving any form of assistance can be viewed negatively, Hopewell resident Melanie Minosky says it’s a judgment-free zone and encourage anyone in need to put their pride aside and ask for help.

“This is my second time doing this because my husband is, unfortunately, losing his job at the end of February. We have three kids, we need support and it helps the community also. People get embarrassed and think people look at them like their lower than everyone else but it’s not. You’d be surprised what kind of levels of people come out that need help nowadays,” said Minosky.

If you missed out on today’s produce market, it is set to take place every first Saturday with the exception of September when it will be held the Saturday following the labor day weekend.
