Modern Brewsters showcases the talents of women in Ohio

ZANESVILLE, OH- Throughout the month of March, coinciding with Women’s History Month, Weasel Boy Brewing is the stage for a striking portrait series titled “Modern Brewsters,” celebrating the contributions of female craft brewers and cider makers across Ohio.
The exhibition not only highlights the significant yet often overlooked role of women in the brewing industry but also their central role in alcohol production throughout history, from Ancient Sumeria to Medieval England.
“So I’m a huge fan of craft beer myself and I love trying new places, and as a woman I realized that a lot of the people that are known for making this beverage were typically men, which is great, the products are good, but then I did a little more reading about the history of craft brewing and I realized that all across the world it’s been known that alcohol was made by women, typically in the home, and then around the industrialization period that kind of shifted to where men started taking over,” said Kaitlin Owens, the creative force behind “Modern Brewsters.”
Despite the historical depth of women’s involvement in brewing, today, they represent only about 7.5% of professional brewers in the United States. However, that number is increasing, thanks in part to organizations like the Pink Boots Society, which supports women in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry through education and career advancement.
“This is an important topic to look at because of the representation. Women have been historically underrepresented in this world even though we’re consumers of it,” said Owens.
The “Modern Brewsters” exhibition will run until mid-April. Visitors are invited to experience the show during Weasel Boy Brewing’s regular business hours. If you know any women Brewsters who would like to be involved on the project, you can email Owens at Kaitlin@kbowensphoto.com.
