Mosquito Control Awareness Week
If you plan to sit out on your deck or attend an outdoor activity during the summer, you’re probably going to encounter the pesky insect, known as the mosquito.
Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department’s Mosquito Control Program Technician, Laney Workman, says the dry weather has helped keep the mosquito population down so far.
“It’s about an average year, but obviously the more rain that we get and the more flood ponds that there are, the higher amount of mosquitoes there are, ” says Workman.
Workman says the Mosquito Control Program can help if the mosquitoes in your area do get unbearable.
“We’re getting bit in the backyard. The kids are getting bit in the woods. So, we go and spray their house and try to help them out, ” says Workman.
This week marks Mosquito Control Awareness Week, where Workman and her colleagues are promoting how to control the mosquito population and why it is so important. She says it helps stop the spread of mosquito-born illnesses, like the West Nile Virus. She says right now, there are no reports of West Nile Virus in the state of Ohio.
