Mother’s Day Cookout
Since 1968, the Washington Township Fire Department has celebrated Mother’s Day with a chicken cookout.
And that hasn’t changed for this year. The department will host its 47th annual Mother’s Day cookout on Sunday, May 10. President, Bruce Burley said meals will start being served at 11:00 a.m. and will continue until they run out of chicken. He said it’s a good way to spend time with family.
"It’s just a nice day to take mom out, get a good dinner, relax, enjoy the other people that are here, talk with them, sort of a family type atmosphere," he said.
The meals cost $9 a piece. You can go to the fire department and eat while enjoying fellowship or you pick up a to go order. Also, the department offers delivery for anyone living in Washington Township.
"We pull the trucks out of the bay," Burley said. "We set up tables and chairs in here and serve inside here on this side and the other side of the station, we have the bay and do the carry-out on that side."
Burley said due to construction, S.R. 93 over I-70 may still be closed on Sunday, so people should use Old Adamsville Road to get to the department. The event helps to raise between $4,000 and $5,000 each year for the department.
