Muskies Serving Their Community

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day not only offers a chance to reflect but also opportunities to honor through serving others.

Muskingum University is changing their approach of serving numerous community organizations on Martin Luther King Day, to honoring his memory by assisting one local organization per month throughout the school year, through their MLK Days of Service initiative.

“We were reached out to by our Director of Cultural Engagement at Muskingum University Val Smith,” Men’s Basketball Head Coach Nathan Wahle said. “And Muskingum University is doing Days of Service each month throughout the calendar year and we were fortunate enough to be asked to participate in this really cool event, with the MLK Scholarship Breakfast. You know, today’s a day where we don’t have classes and it’s a great opportunity for our team to give back to the community.”

Many times the strength of a community can be witnessed by the amount of support its members share between one another. As with any event, big or small, set up and tear down are required and as the old saying goes; many hands make light work.

“It means a lot because they come out and support us,” Muskingum University Senior Basketball Player Korey Robinson said. “You know we have games and things of that nature, so being able to come back here and being able to show people to their seats, open doors, it just gives a sense of humbleness for us and our team.”

Muskingum University’s MLK Days of Service initiative allows the school more flexibility to gather students for community service projects as well as the opportunity to better fit the local organizations’ timeframes.
