Muskingum 250 honors the past at Stars and Stripes on the River

ZANESVILLE, OH- The Muskingum River is the place to be this Independence Day as crowds gather for the annual Stars and Stripes on the River celebration.
Among the food, fireworks, and fun, one booth stood out with a message of history and heritage. Muskingum 250, a sub-committee of Muskingum County History, was on site to promote their mission of honoring the people from this region who played a role in America’s founding.
“Just being able to celebrate as a community our independence, and the greatest country on the planet, we have the oldest constitution on the planet, and it’s something to celebrate and we get to do it in a fun way so it’s going to be fun,” said Rebecca Carr, Muskingum 250 Committee Chair.
Muskingum 250 is taking part in a national effort to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. Their events highlight the Revolutionary War through the War of 1812, focusing on veterans who later settled in Muskingum County.
“Our history is so important because it’s who we are, it’s a big part of our identity, we are here because of the people who have come before us and we like to say that we stand on their shoulders, without knowing our history it’s hard to know where we’re going as a country, as a county, and we think it’s very important to honor them but also to remember their sacrifice and why they sacrificed,” said Carr.
Muskingum 250 will host a free movie series this summer at Ohio University Zanesville’s Elson Auditorium. Screenings will take place at 6:30 p.m. on June 27, July 25, August 22 and September 26.
