Muskingum Co. Sheriff’s Sergeant discusses working on holidays

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- While New Year’s day is a holiday for most, First Responders say it’s just like any other day of the year…a time to serve and protect the community.
Sergeant Matt McCauley with The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office says he began his career as a dispatcher and worked his way up to deputy. He says working the holidays is just part of the job.
“Well I think everyone when they get into law enforcement, they know that their going to be starting working weekends, working holidays, and if you don’t know that going in, you find out really quickly, it’s a sacrifice you make and it’s what you signed up to do,” said Sergeant McCauley.
McCauley says that calls have been slow so far Tuesday.
“I’ve been with the office for almost 11 years now and as far as new year’s go its mainly like any other holiday, it’s either really really busy or generally slow. So it just depends. A lot has to do with how active it was the night before when it comes to day shift,” said McCauley.
Despite being on the clock, the First Responders say knowing they’re helping someone else makes the sacrifices worthwhile.
