Encouraging Reading in Muskingum Youth

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Commissioners met to hear some updates about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio.
As of this past September, 3,642 children in Muskingum County have been enrolled in the Imagination Library. Becky Hill, the Treasurer for the Muskingum County Literacy Council, said Muskingum County has led the state in enrollment.
“We have been leading the State for our percentage enrollment for about 2 years,” Hill said. “I believe we are also 4th in the State with our percentage at 73% but we are hoping to fill that other 27%.”
The first book a child receives is “The Little Engine That Could”, which is Dolly’s favorite book. Hill also said the Imagination Library is a great way to get your little one interested in reading.
“Reading, it just gets them started for life,” Hill said. “If we can get the kids to enjoy getting books in the mail and having parents read to them. It’s just a reminder every month how important it is to read to your child.”
The Imagination Library mails kids one high-quality, age-appropriate book each month from birth until their 5th birthday. The program is no cost to their family by signing up.
