Muskingum County Dog Wardens update Commissioners on new building plans

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Muskingum County Dog Warden and Adoption Center was back in front of the County Commissioners to discuss the plans for their new building.

The Dog Wardens were joined by the architect over the project Pat Kelly who went over the current proposed blueprint with the Commissioners. The Commissioners said the cost for the project is out of budget and other options need to be explored.

“The estimate we got was a lot higher than we originally wanted, but it sounds like from the meeting that we’re going to be able to cut some things and revamp the building and I think it’s really going to work out with the building that was given to us,” said Brittany Calihan, Deputy Dog Warden.

The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office donated their old evidence and impound building to the Dog Wardens so they can move their operations to a bigger facility. The new building will give the Wardens the space needed to properly care for the animals in their care and an inviting space for potential owners to visit with the dogs. To help with the costs of the project the Adoption Center has been doing some fundraising on their own.

“Our volunteers are working really hard fundraising They have fundraised close to $70,000 I believe. And they are still out there every weekend doing something. We have donation boxes around town.”

Calihan says they’re hoping to start the project sometime in the next few months. Any donations can be taken directly to the Adoption Center.
