ZANESVILLE, OH – As the community gears up for the holiday season, staying vigilant about winter safety is crucial for a joyful and secure winter season.

Aligning with Winter Safety Awareness Week, the Emergency Management Agency provided some tips on preparing for the colder months. The EMA emphasized the importance of readying our homes and preparing for possible power outages by keeping a supply of essentials.

“We’ve got to be concerned with having enough food, water, and blankets or sleeping bags to stay warm. Not only consider ourselves, but our kids, our grandkids if they live with us, and our pets. Do we have enough water and food for them also,” Muskingum County EMA Director, Jeff Jadwin said.

The EMA also recommends that drivers keep essential items in their vehicles to ensure safety during those unpredictable winter weather conditions.

“To be prepared, you need to carry a shovel in your car so if you get stuck in a snow drift or thick snow you can dig it out. An ice scraper, extra clothes, blankets in the car, and a first aid kit,” Jadwin said.

A small amount of preparation can significantly impact safety during winter emergencies.
