Muskingum County History Society invites you to come learn more about your heritage

MUSKINGUM COUNTY, OH- The Muskingum County History Society is an organization that strives to educate people on the deep and unique history of the area.
The historical society wants to spread the importance of having a meaningful identity as a community. Each year they host a themed open house at the Dr. Increase Mathews home.
“This year we went with a civil war era, and the decorations were way down because it was so simple back then, and we’ve got some stations where we were making bandages for the soldiers and making a little Christmas present of a doll, stringing popcorn for the little tree that’s out on the other room,” says Janet James, a Board of Trustees member for the Muskingum County Historical Society.
They invite everyone to get more involved with Muskingum County’s history.
“We also love to have as many people come in whether they are members or not, just so they can be aware of the wonderful history we have in our area, in our county,” says Ann Burkhart, a Board of Trustees member for the Muskingum County Historical Society.
From the Underground Railroad to the founding of the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society, Muskingum County has a lot of history that would surprise you.
“We operate two museums, the Stone Academy, as well as the Increase Mathews house, the Increase Mathews house was built in 1805, the Stone Academy over on Jefferson Street was built in 1809,” says Peter Cultice, President of the Muskingum County History Society.
The Muskingum County History Society would love to give you a tour of their museums and teach you more about the history of the area.
