Muskingum History Celebrates National Women’s Month

ZANESVILLE, OH – March is National Women’s Month and to celebrate that a local historical organization is hosting events to highlight the women who helped build Muskingum County.

Muskingum History has a month full of fun events planned to help the community learn about how it all started.

Dr. Larisa Harper, the Executive Director of Muskingum History, said the Putnam Female Seminary & Significant Putnam Women events filled up so quickly that now there is a waitlist for those interested in attending.

But she said there’s many more opportunities to learn about the Zane Family, historical events, as well as some history about the Dresden area.

“Our other events include, the Zane Family; Ebenezer Zane, Betty Zane, Jonathan Zane,” Harper explained. “You’ll learn about some of the family members that aren’t very often known or spoken about. We also have a presentation on the 1913 Flood, which occurred in March 1913, and we have had several programs over the years about that flood but this year we’ll put a little new twist on it, we’ll look at areas that were impacted further away from the river.”

Harper said she wants to show community members the importance of preserving our history so it can be passed down through more generations.

She also said she hopes everyone who attends the events walks away with a few more history facts they didn’t know before.

“This is our [history], we own it, we need to be proud of it and we need to learn about it,” Harper said. “So each time someone attends an event we hope that they walk away with something new, that they can share with their family and friends. Even if they’ve heard 20 presentations about the 1913 Flood, I hope they learn at least one or two more new things because there’s just so much to know.”
