Muskingum Recreation Center Getting Ready For Triathlon

The Muskingum County Recreation Center is gearing up for its Triathlon in February.

In case you were wondering just what a triathlon is, it’s a swimming, biking and running event. Some go on for great distances but the rec center is scaling it down to a less intimidating size. Susan Bowen, Aquatics and Sport Manager told us more.

“The indoor triathlon that we’re doing is a 10 minute swim, followed by a 30 minute bike and then a 20 minute run or walk on the treadmill.”

Anyone 12 years of age or older is eligible to take part. The cost is $35 for members and $45for non members, which according to Bowen, includes a T-shirt, a swim cap and a water bottle. 23 people have already signed up. Bowen says the event is meant to have a fun factor.

“Triathlons a really popular sport right now and they generally take place outside so doing an indoor triathlon is something just a little bit different than your run of the mill triathlon. So a lot of people can get valuable experience during the winter season and its great for anybody who’s a beginner because it’s a shortened length that’s based on time instead of distance so it starts together and ends together. So its just meant to be fun.”

Bowen says the top three finishers in the mens and womens category will receive a medal. If you would like to take part, you can sign up at the Rec Centers website:

The event is taking place on February 1, 2015.
