Muskingum University’s commencement is a send off for graduates and the university president

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Muskingum University’s 2026 May Commencement Ceremony took place on Saturday and was the final one to be attended by it’s current president.
Around 300 students graduated at the end of the spring semester and while they were recognized, University President Susan S. Hasseler was recognized for her leadership. Hasseler is set to retire from Muskingum at the end of June, making Saturday her last commencement ceremony. Hasseler has been the university president since 2016 and was this years commencement speaker.
“Throughout her leadership, President Hasseler has guided Muskingum with deep commitment to our students, our mission and our future,” said Cheryl Carpenter, the Board of Trustees Chair for Muskingum University. “Today, she speaks to this graduating class at a moment that reflects both their achievements and her endearing, enduring impact on this university. It is my honor to both introduce President Hasseler and on behalf of the board of trustees confer upon her with an honorary degree.”
Hasseler was conferred a doctorate of humane letters by the Muskingum University Board of Trustees. Afterwards, she addressed the graduating class who she charged with becoming leaders. Leaders that will help shape a nation and a world that Hasseler said is unfinished.
“It is both beautiful and broken. It is still being shaped every moment by people willing to engage, to question, to build and sometimes to challenge. And that is where you come in. Not all at once, but in seminal moments and not perfectly but persistently,” Hasseler said.
The Muskingum University’s commencement ceremony was live streamed by the student media organization Orbit Media on their YouTube channel. The live stream is now archived on the channel for anyone who may have missed the event.
