Muskingum University’s first art exhibition of the semester is under way

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – From now until Sept. 10, you can find more than 60 pieces of art that includes ceramics, sculptures, paintings, photography and fashion. Some of the artists featured are Ohio natives while others can be found across the globe in China.

“For the muskies, even new students I want to show that the Louie Palmer Gallery can represent the art from the worldwide artists work. Let the student know what is a new trend of fine art,” said Yan Sun.

Yan Sun is the curator for the exhibition and has been with Muskingum University for 30 years. He says going into his 30th year motivated him to go all out for this exhibition.

“That’s why we have a big celebration, we have so wide, the categories of the arts that let the students know there’s more about contemporary art,” Sun said.

One of the artists on display will be giving a guest lecture on Wednesday Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. as a chance to further expand the educational opportunities that the gallery can have under its roof.

“So Philista Marie Mills is one of our featured artist. She does fashion design and she will be speaking here at the Palmer gallery on the Wednesday the 16th of September at 1 o’clock and everyone is invited to attend that lecture and to meet her and speak with her and hear about her process,” said Tom German, the chair of the arts and design department at Muskingum University.

While the event is exhibition is on a university campus with the goal to educate students and exposing them to unique pieces of art, the exhibitions at the Louie O. Palmer Gallery are open to everyone.

“We get a lot of traffic from Muskingum Students and faculty and staff to come visit but it’s always great to see people from Cambridge, Zanesville, even the New Concord area. This is a great little gem and we would really love to welcome you,” German said.

A unique highlight of the art on display are four paintings from the university’s new president, Dr. Flavius Lilly. If you check out the exhibition, you can enter a raffle where you might get to take home a Flav original.

The Louie O. Palmer Gallery will be open from 3-5 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The Embracing a New Era with New Perspectives Exhibition runs until Oct. 1.
