MVHC logoZANESVILLE, Ohio- Ever wonder the difference between the flu and a the common cold? Well, you’re in luck.

Physician Assistant, Kristin Davis at Muskingum Valley Health Centers said the flu and the cold are both caused by viruses. But each illness has distinguishing symptoms.

“Both the flu and cold are viral respiratory illnesses caused from viruses. However they’re spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. The symptoms are generally the same except with the flu. It’s more severe with fever, body aches, fatigue, and a dry cough. A cold usually has more nasal congestion or runny nose. Treatment for the flu is an antivirus medication. We recommend that you get that medication within 48 hours from the time that the symptoms start. So if you’re not feeling well it’s important that you get an appointment with you’re medical provider to be seen as soon as possible,” said Davis.

Physician Assistant, Davis said preventive measures like washing your hands, staying away from sick people, and getting the yearly flu vaccine are vital to combat falling ill.

“This year’s flu vaccine is covering three different strains Influenza A strains, H1N1/H3N2, and Influenza B strains as well. And the flu vaccine effectiveness varies among the over all population. But reduce flu illness by about 50-60%,” said Davis.

Davis said if you believe that you are suffering from a viral or respiratory illness to visit your primary care provider.
