National Library Week

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The world has many issues and circumstances that affect many humans in many ways and leaders designate certain days, weeks and months to bring awareness, celebrate and advocate for the many reasons these moments are recognized.

This week is National Library Appreciation Week and Muskingum County Library System Marketing and Communications Director Sean Fennell explained the significance of the recognition and how it began.

“This was actually started back in the late to mid 1950s by the American Library Association, which is still our flagship organization for all libraries throughout the nation. And this is really just a week to be able to come in and celebrate what your public library does, or any library in your community,” Fennell said.

Today’s libraries offer more than just book lending, they provide digital resources and technical assistance along with opportunities to connect with information, ideas and people.

“To help celebrate just internally we are doing some small things but just fun ways to kind of help staff celebrate and enjoy the week just a little bit more,” Fennell said. “So this entire week it is casual dress for the entire week and we’re actually also throwing an ice cream party. And actually I think tomorrow I’ll be heading out to one of the branches with ice cream as well. So it should be just a really fun way to just celebrate our staff.”

Fennell added that even though MCLS hasn’t scheduled any public events related to National Library Week, you can show your appreciation by bringing someone who doesn’t have a library card to get signed up and experience all the benefits the library has to offer.
