National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the Ohio State Highway Patrols reminds everyone to share the road and be cautious around motorcyclists.

In addition, motorcyclists should also be prepared when they get on the road.

“In crashes where motorcycles were involved, 10 percent of those crashes involved alcohol and drugs. That’s an alarming statistic because that’s over twice the rate that normal passenger cars have in crashes,” OSHP Trooper Brice Nihiser said.

With the weather warming up, motorcycles tend to be out on the roads more. This is a time for riders and motorists to refresh on how to be more safe when sharing the road.

“Something that we encourage all motorcyclists to do this season is to make sure you’re trained, endorsed and sober. That means going out and going through a motorcycle safety course if you haven’t already. Making sure you have that endorsement. Last year, over 52 percent of motorcycle crashes, the rider did not have an endorsement,” Nihiser said.

The OSHP reminds everyone to do a double take on interstates and intersections for motorcycles, as they appear smaller in the driver’s field of view. Look twice, save a life.
