New Bill would allow Guns in Bars

A new bill in the State House could soon allow Ohio residents who have a concealed weapons permit to carry guns in bars.

Thursday, WHIZ got a local law enforcement reaction to the controversial bill that has already passed the Ohio Senate in a 25 to 7 vote. Zanesville Police Chief Eric Lambes says he supports people that want to protect themselves, but is uneasy about this particular bill.

"Historically, the thought of guns around alcohol usually doesn’t turn out well so im kind of mixed or at least moderately against that idea," said Lambes.

The new law would allow people to carry guns into restaurants or bars where alcohol is served but those who have a gun on them are not allowed to drink alcohol. Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz agrees with Chief Lambes.

"Anytime you put firearms and alcohol together, the odds increase significantly on something happening," said Lutz.

The law would still ban those from carrying a gun into any bar or restaurant that does not allow concealed weapons on the grounds. The bill must pass the House before Governor Kasich signs the legislation into law.
