New Dog Pound in the Works
Rescued animals from across Muskingum County may soon have a new place to call home.
Plans for a new dog pound are moving right along, as volunteers from the Muskingum County Dog and Kennel are continuing their efforts to bring a more inviting facility to the area. With the well-being of the animals as their number one concern, volunteers said a new and improved facility would provide a healthier environment for them. On Thursday, they presented the county commissioners with a detailed sketch of what they’d like to see in their new rescue center.
“We have made further steps to make plans for our new pound, facility, we brought a draft in to show the commissioners to get their approval of what they thought should be maybe added to, or taken away, their ideas on how we could maybe possibly get some funding and who we maybe need to talk to do that,” said volunteer, Doug McQuaid.
As they are currently pressed for space in the existing facility, the new rescue center would add eight additional kennels to house more animals in need. McQuaid said they are still in the early stages of planning, but volunteers are hoping to make the project a community effort in terms of funding.
“We’re actually going to try to go with the general public to try to help us out some, and it seems like the public has a lot to do with animals, and that may be a good start,” he said.
If the project goes through, volunteers are hoping to open the new rescue center in the next two years.
