New Dog Rescue Center Possibly in the Works

Volunteers from the Muskingum County Dog Pound have hopes to bring a new, more inviting facility to the area.

They met with the county commissioners Monday, to discuss options for a new rescue center. Volunteer, Doug McQuaid said an improved facility would be ideal for the overall health and well-being of the animals.

“What we’re trying to focus on is trying to build a new pound, and by doing that we needed to get the permission, talk to the commissioners to find out if they would be willing to give us the land, and get their ideas on what they feel would be a pound that would be quality enough for the health of the animals, and for the general public, the appearance, and so forth that would bring the people to our area, more so than what it is now,” McQuaid said.

The commissioners also recognized the volunteers for their unconditional efforts controlling the distemper outbreak last Spring, and awarded them a Certificate of Appreciation. Twenty-two of the 28 dogs quarantined have been adopted or rescued.

“It was great, it was something unexpected, and we all appreciate it,” McQuaid said.

Re-branding is also on the agenda, as volunteers are looking into renaming the pound altogether. Mcquaid said they are hoping to make this project a community effort.
