New Technology Allows Detailed Scans

Imagine being able to see incredibly detailed images of your body’s organs, allowing doctors to dectect disease much easier and possibly earlier.

That’s just what a new piece of technology allows. The Aquilion-64 made its way to Genesis Healthcare Systems in Zanesville. The new machine allows CT scans to be broken down into 64 “slices,” or 2-D images.

“We can take 64 images at once. That allows us to do our studies faster, it’s more comfortable for the patient,” said Director of Imaging Services, Cheryl Stillberger. “It also allows us to take thin slices which allows us to take that data and reprocess it to 3-D.”

The new scanner is able to capture detailed, three-dimensional images of a beating heart in five heartbeats, an organ in one second, and perform whole body scans in ten seconds–more than twice as fast as conventional multi-slice CT scanners.

“Basically any part of the body can be scanned,” she said. “In the head we’re looking for tumors or vascular disease, or any kind of vessel that may have an abnormality in the chest, abdomen, pelvis, looking at different organs, the heart, liver and bowel.”
