Newark Catholic Plays On!

Akron, OH- A thrilling come-from-behind 6-4 win over Calvert sends Newark Catholic back to the Division VII state title game on Saturday.

Starting in the third inning, Malone Hutchinson hits a single, getting a runner home. This would spark the potential comeback that the Green Wave so desperately need. They’d get two runs in this inning, making them down 3 to 2.
In the fifth Max Moore got in on the action with a double as there was an error to the throw at first base, allowing another runner to get home.

The Green Wave would build on the momentum making it 5 to 3 after the 5th inning.

One of the biggest keys in this game was pitching and defense as senior Miller Hutchinson came in this game with the bases loaded and only allowed one run throughout the entire game.

In the sixth, Calvert would get one more run, but this RBI single from Hal Gillepsee would seal the deal.

Coach Graves is proud of his team and how far they have come, “You know, and we’ve had a lot of great groups that have come up here and we you know, Newark Catholic’s won nine state championships. And we’re this is our 18th year we’ve been up here. But this you know he said, you know this group they may be goofy and you know they may be young but they play hard and they have put in, you know, in the last six months, they have put in the extra work every, you know, all the time.”

Senior Pitcher Miller Hutchison is thrilled, but credits his team for this win, “I’m, I’m pretty much speechless. It’s a great feeling. We’ve been saying for the past couple of weeks, let’s get back to where we belong. Our school’s been in a bit of a drought, so for us to get back in this game is absolutely huge. But like I said, all credit to my teammates. It was all them today.”

For senior 2nd baseman Mikey Hess, this is all he’s ever wanted, “Ever since I got to high school, like, that’s that’s my dream goal. That’s that would be it would be no better way to go out. I mean.”
