Ohio Flags of Honor Opening Night

The opening ceremony of the Ohio Flags of Honor memorial brought in a large crowd at Zane’s Landing Park Friday night.

Notable faces from around the area took part in the event, including state senator Troy Balderson and Zanesville mayor Jeff Tilton. The ceremony started with a tearful invocation, along with our national anthem. The Zanesville Blue Devils football team were among those who set out the honorary flags. Program president, Geno Zimmer talked to us about the memorial.

“The flags are out here for people to come and pay their respects, or just enjoy, or if they know somebody here, it’s the time to maybe spend some time with that military personnel that they knew who died in action,” Zimmer said.

The flags will be on display all weekend long for folks to come out and see. Tomorrow, as part of the Wounded Warrior Project’s, Poker Run, bikers will take an honorary ride through the display. Zimmer explained how he takes pride in holding such a significant event.

“It’s something important to remember, you know why we live in the best country in the world, why people come all over the world to live here,” he said. “It makes me feel great when I see parents come and see that their son or daughter in not forgotten, I got goosebumps.”

Hundreds are expected to come out this weekend to honor, respect, and support our heroes.
