Ohio Gov. Mike Dewine Proposes State Gas Tax Increase

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Ohio drivers will possibly pay more at gas pumps this summer due to a proposal from Governor Mike Dewine and his administration.
Governor Dewine has recommended an increase in the state gas tax by 18 cents a gallon. The current gas tax is 28 cents, with the increase bringing the number to 46 cents. This proposal was included in the transportation budget submitted to legislators. We spoke with locals and their concerns on the gas tax proposal from the Governor. One Zanesville resident explained his disagreement with the proposal.
“They want to raise the gas taxes, so we’re actually getting along and have a halfway decent gas price. They want that money for them, just like all politicians. It’s money for them,” said Ole Oconnell.
Governor Dewine said the tax increase will be used for infrastructure such as maintaining the roads and bridges. The Ohio Department of Transportation Director told legislators that without the revenue, there will be a shortage of funds for highway improvement projects. Another Zanesville resident said he understood the purpose of the tax increase.
“I would rather everything be done, but if it has to be I’d rather have good roads, good bridges. And know that the money is going to the right place,” said Rob Moehrman.
If the budget is approved by legislature the increase will occur July 1st of this year.
