Ohio Heat Raises Concerns for Outdoor Workers

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — With temperatures soaring into the 90s and heat indexes topping 100 degrees, health experts are warning people to take the heat seriously.

Construction workers are among those hit hardest, spending long hours under the sun to keep projects moving forward. Despite the conditions, crews are staying vigilant and adjusting their routines.

“These temperatures specifically pose a real problem because when they come on suddenly, you know our crews haven’t had time to acclimate. One of the important things we like to talk to our teams about is recognizing the early signs of heat related illness and being able to act fast on those because prevention is always better than response,” ODOT public information officer Chas Cosgrave said.

Spotting symptoms early is key, especially as heat-related illnesses can escalate fast. Being aware of your own body and watching out for coworkers could make all the difference in the coming weeks.

“It starts with hydration. Especially in this extreme heat so for our crews specifically we encourage them to take breaks, whenever possible take breaks in an air conditioned or shaded area,” Cosgrave said. “In addition to hydration, you know, taking breaks… monitoring one another. Teamwork is essential. It’s not just about recognizing those signs and symptoms in yourself but in your coworkers. We also talk to our supervisors about being able to recognize those signs of heat related illness in your employees as well,” Cosgrave added.

Officials say even brief exposure in extreme heat can be dangerous so if you’re outside, take breaks, stay shaded, and drink plenty of water.
