ZANESVILLE, OH – Thanksgiving has come and gone, now it’s time to get ready for deer gun season.

Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted talked about the importance of deer season to our state.

“A few weeks ago I was able to harvest an 8-point buck,” Lt. Gov. Husted said. “We love this time of year, my wife loves to cook with meat we harvest. Really, this has just been a family tradition for my whole life.”

Husted said some important things to remember when you’re hunting are to always wear your hunter’s orange, be careful climbing trees or rocks, as well as practicing gun safety.

“It’s also important that we have a well managed hunting program here in Ohio so we can manage the deer population,” Husted said. “Ask any farmer and they will tell you that deer can do a lot of damage. Also protecting motorists on the highways, deer car accidents can do a tremendous amount of damage. We need to help manage the deer population.”

Husted also said this is a great way to bring the family together to spend time with one another.

“If you can, make sure you take a kid hunting,” Husted said. “You can teach them how to handle a gun, crossbow, or bow responsibly. Then you can just spend time with them, when they’re hunting they can’t be on their cellphones, they just get to enjoy nature.”
