Ohio Officials Urge Caution This Memorial Day Weekend

ZANESVILLE, OH – It’s the unofficial start of summer. Millions of drivers are expected to hit the road this Memorial Day weekend, and officials say to plan ahead, buckle up and drive safely.

Highways across Ohio will be packed as families head out for barbecues, lake days, and long-awaited getaways. But as the holiday excitement builds, authorities are sharing a serious reminder.

“Memorial Day is our first big summer holiday. A lot of people will be out traveling. So, we encourage motorists to drive safely, to drive the speed limit, and to utilize the resources you have in your vehicle. Wear seat belts, helmets it you’re on a motorcycle, and any safety features you can use,” Sgt. Kyle Shirer, with the Zanesville OSHP said.

Last year, 26 people lost their lives in 22 fatal crashes during the Memorial Day weekend in Ohio. To help prevent further tragedy, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement. Troopers will be on the lookout for speeding, distracted driving, impaired drivers, and seat belt violations.

“We’ll be out in full force working the roads and making sure that motorists are staying compliant with our laws,” Sgt. Shirer said.

If you see dangerous or impaired driving, or suspect drug activity on the roads, please call #677 to help keep Ohio safe this holiday weekend.
