MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- The Ohio State Highway Patrol held a recruitment event today at the Fieldhouse for those wanting to become a state trooper

The recruitment event consisted of a fitness assessment where those interested partook in a mile and a half run, push ups and sit ups that were timed, according to Matt Boyd, Lieutenant with Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He said the whole process takes about 2 to 3 months to complete and they would have to be between 21 before they graduate the academy or they have to start the academy before they turn 25.

“The requirements to get into the highway patrol is to have a high school diploma or GED. College is not required. Of course we do recommend to everybody that they continue their education, but it’s not required prior to coming into highway patrol,” Lieutenant Boyd stated. “They have to be a resident of the United States and they have to become an Ohio resident before they become a trooper. They have to have a valid driver’s license and then they have to have that license moved into Ohio before they graduate the academy as well.”

Lieutenant Boyd talked more on what they are looking for and what it means to become a state trooper.

“We’re looking for people that want to make a difference in their community, that want to save people’s lives by being proactive in law enforcement and traffic safety. A lot of people that join this field have an interest in making their community a better place to live and want to help people and we’re looking for those people and trying to give them the opportunity to be a part of the Ohio State Highway Patrol,” Lieutenant Boyd said.

The written exam would be the next step if they haven’t taken it already. Then once completed, they would have to complete a background and polygraph check.

The next recruitment event will be held on March 17th in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio Patrol Academy on 17th Avenue. For more information, please visit statepatrol.ohio.gov.
