Ohio Stoneware is keeping Pottery in Zanesville

ZANESVILLE, Ohio–Zanesville is known for its pottery, and there’s a business in town that has been around for almost 20 years.

Ross and Tiffany Pattison  bought Ohio Stoneware in 2005 to sell wholesale pottery, but opened a retail store just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Tiffany says everything seen in store is made in store.

“Everything here is manufactured either here or at our other manufacturing locations in Zanesville, and then our warehouse and offices are at a third location,” Tiffany said “All the bakeware, stoneware, crocks, pet feeders, hand decorated items all made right here in Zanesville. “

The Pattisons sell everything from coffee mugs to bird feeders. However, the pottery goes through a long process and is touched by over a dozen hands before it hits the shelves.

Ross says there are three different ways to make the pottery.

“We have what’s called the jiggerman, we have our ram pressing and we have our slip casting. So depending on the item, it’s all made in different ways,” Ross said. “We bring all the clay in by semi loads, and we make all of our own clay here, and we manufacture press the items or cast the items. Then they are finished and then they are glazed and fired at approximately 2200 degrees.”

The retail store is located at 1719 Dearborn St. and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
