On the Fly with Aniyah and Shy: Taking Arbor Day to New Heights

NEWARK, OH – Today is Arbor Day, and if you’re looking to celebrate, one event is branching out this weekend.
If climbing trees is on your weekend bucket list, or if you’re just looking for something fun to do outside, you can find it all at The Dawes Arboretum.
On Saturday, April 25th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Arboretum is hosting its annual Arbor Day Festival, inviting the community to celebrate all things trees. The free event features a plant sale, educational demonstrations, and even free tree seedlings, while supplies last. And with local food vendors on-site, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
“There will also be tree climbing, which is wonderful. It is fun. Normally, we’d say ‘why are you climbing trees if you’re protecting trees?’ But what’s neat about the tree climbing is some of the systems that they use is the same system that arborists use to care for and manage the health of trees. So, while it’s a fun activity, it also is teaching families and kids ways that they can safely go into a tree to care for it.” Karla Long, the Senior Director of Learning & Research, said.
With guidance and safety gear, visitors can make their way up into the trees and experience nature from a whole new perspective.
“The Arboretum is about trees, but this gives people a different perspective of a tree. You know, we all can see trees when we look and we have them in our yards. But when you get up close and personal. It’s really cool to get people close to the trees and really appreciate what our trees are doing.” Tim Mason, Co-owner of Natural Fit Outdoor Adventures, said.
Whether you’re climbing trees, or just enjoying everything spring has to offer, you can celebrate Arbor Day at the Dawes Arboretum located at 7770 Jacksontown Road in Newark. The event is free to attend!
More event information is available on their website and Facebook page.
