OSHP Releases Statistics from Memorial Day Reporting Period

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Ohio State Highway Patrol recently released its statistics for the Memorial Day weekend reporting period.

The reporting period ran from May 24th to the 27th and the Patrol reports that statewide there were 14 fatal crashes.

Seventeen people died as a result of those fatal crashes.

Here locally, State Trooper with the Zanesville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Scott Leach, reported that there 208 enforcement stops conducted.

“The area had 16 OVI arrests, the state had 307 OVI arrests,” Leach said. “I believe for the state we had just shy of 15,000 total enforcements.”

The Memorial Day Holiday travel is just the beginning of what’s shaping up to be a very busy travel filled summer.

Leach says with the expected heavy traffic this summer, it’s a good idea to stay alert and sober behind the wheel.

“It’s just important, to really just keep an eye out on your surroundings and what other traffic is doing out there,” Leach said. “We’re going to be out there, playing a big part in trying to keep everyone safe. Focusing strongly on impaired drivers and distracted drivers, that seems to be a big problem out there now.”

If you see or suspect someone is driving under the influence, you can call #677 to report it.
