MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds drivers to ‘Buckle Up’ and ‘Drive Sober” for the Memorial Day weekend.

According to the OSHP, last year in Ohio, 20 people were killed in car crashes during the Memorial Day weekend. 10 of those were OVI related and four were unbelted.

“With any of the major holidays during the summer, there are going to be more troopers out. We’re going to be out there making sure that everyone is safe, making sure everyone gets to and from their destinations safely,” OSHP Trooper Brice Nihiser said.

As the pandemic slows down and more people begin venturing out, which leads to more traffic on the roadways.

“With everything opening up this week, you know restrictions are being lifted with the pandemic, obviously that’s going to create an environment where more people are going to be going out, more people are going to be comfortable and going to these cookouts and things like that. That’s why we want everyone to be safe,” Nihiser said.

The OSHP is also taking part in the 6-state Trooper Project where they are focusing on the use of safety belts. OSHP reminds everyone this holiday to not drive distracted, wear your seatbelt and drive sober.
