OSHP Reminds All Motorists of Motorcycle Safety

ZANESVILLE, OH – Summer may almost be over, but the peak of motorcycle riding season is in full swing.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol wants to remind all motorists that motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility.

Sergeant Jeff Jirles of the Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol says here locally 2 people have died as the result of a motorcycle crash and another from an ATV accident.

Sergeant Jirles says weekends are busiest days for motorcycle traffic and identified a few roads to be extra careful on.

“We have some popular State Routes locally. SR 555 is a big motorcycle route especially on the weekends,” Sgt. Jirles said. “State Routes 83, 93, 60, and 146 as well, so if you travel those roadways, especially on the weekends, we’re asking you to really recognize that these motorcycles are out there with you.”

Jirles recommends all motorcyclists to wear the proper safety equipment as well as something to make yourself more visible to another vehicle.

“Generally, we find these motorcycle accidents are somewhat preventable,” Jirles said. “There’s always going to be a certain number of accidents but visibility is the biggest issue. Visibility of the vehicle and visibility of the rider, so whatever our local riders can do to be as visible as possible, daylight or dark, certainly is going to improve their chances.”

Jirles also recommends signing up for a course to help brush up on your motorcycle safety.
