Paul J. Carpenter, 83 of Zanesville , OH died 6:55 AM Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Forest View Health Campus Zanesville.
He was born June 14, 1928 in Zanesville OH the son of Howard J. Carpenter and Grace M. (Vogt) Carpenter.
He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He retired from General Electric after 37 years of service and was former Grand Knight & building chairman of the Knights of Columbus council 505. He was awarded, along with his family, the “State of Ohio Catholic Family of the Year” in 1989 by the Knights of Columbus. Along with his brother Francis he laid out the original baseball diamonds for Y-City Midget League. Over the years he played and coached baseball and basketball and enjoyed bowling, golf and spending time with his family.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Martha J. ( Dosch ) Carpenter of 61years whom he married on Saturday, June 24, 1950 , nine children: Doug (Bobbi) Carpenter of Plain City, Becky Raymond of Canal Winchester, Susan (Hugh) Maxwell of Zanesville, Linda Sibert of Coshocton, Carol (“Rookie”) Cooperrider of Newark, Barbara (Karl) Durst of Grove City, Tom (Vanessa) Carpenter of Salem Va., Bob (Betty) Carpenter of Zanesville and Mary (Doug) Tyo of Zanesville. 34 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Two brothers Francis (Rita) Carpenter of Zanesville and Jim (Charlotte) Carpenter of Thornville and a sister Teresa Smith of Canal Winchester.
Preceded in death in addition to his parents were two sons-in-law Marty Raymond and Ron Sibert, a sister and brother-in-law Marguerite & Jim McFarland, a brother-in-law Bill Smith.
Friends may call on Tuesday Oct. 25 at the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with Rosary being recited at 1:30pm. The family will also receive friends on Wednesday Oct. 26 at the funeral home from 9 to 10am with mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church 144 North Fifth Street Zanesville OH with Dominican Fathers as celebrant. Burial will conclude in the Mt. Olive Cemetery Zanesville OH.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bishop Rosecrans High School or the Alzheimer’s Association.
