The annual Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony was held today at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, bringing together law enforcement officers, families, and community members to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The ceremony served as a tribute to fallen officers, recognizing both their sacrifices and the lasting impact they made on their communities. Current officers stood alongside the families and friends of those being honored, underscoring the strong sense of unity within the law enforcement community.

A candlelight portion of the ceremony provided a solemn moment of reflection, as each fallen officer’s name was read aloud. Attendees listened as a brief summary of each officer’s career was shared, highlighting their dedication and service.

Fraternal Order of Police President Tom Porter emphasized the deeper meaning behind the profession and the importance of community support.

“It’s important because these men and women, they put on this uniform and it’s more than a check,” Porter said. “It’s a way of protecting and serving their community. It shows them—and the retired members—that the community cares when they come out here and give us the support like they did today.”

U.S. Congressman Troy Balderson also attended as a guest speaker, expressing his respect for law enforcement officers and acknowledging the sacrifices they make in service to others.

Porter reiterated that the purpose of the ceremony extends beyond remembrance—it is a promise that those who served will never be forgotten.

“We want them to know, as well as our families, they’re never forgotten,” Porter said. “We honor the sacrifices they made protecting our communities, whether it be here or across the nation. It’s not a surprise to me to see this community turnout. We are blessed here in Muskingum County.”

The event concluded with a shared sense of gratitude and remembrance, as attendees reflected on the lives and legacies of the officers honored.
