‘Penny War’

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A local elementary competed in a ‘Penny War’ for their programs and the Muskingum County Dog Warden and Adoption Center.
From February 27, 2017 until March 3, 2017 students at Nashport Elementary School participated in their first ever ‘Penny War’. Secretary Krysta Wasson was Event Coordinator and she said the students raised almost $2,000.
“So they were extremely excited because they were competing against each grade,” Wasson said. “So they were to bring in points, which were pennies and then they’d bring in other coins. Which would take away points from another grade. So it was really competitive the kids really loved it and it brought in a lot of money.”
The second grade class were the winners of the ‘Penny War’ and in return presented the check. Wasson said $500 went to the Warden and Adoption Center specifically for their new building.
“We’re all about the dogs and like I said with this new facility and when anybody at all comes to us and says that they you know had a fundraiser or wanted to do something,” Volunteer Doug McQuaid said. “Especially all these students, all these elementary kids are putting forth an effort towards that. You can tell they’re really excited you know when I talked to them. So I mean how much better could it be.”
The remains of their money will go towards guided reading materials, classroom iPads, field trips, and playground equipment.
