People Still Hunting For Jobs

A new report from the Associated Press says the number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for jobless benefits dropped last week.

The AP says this may be evidence that layoffs have eased. While Ohio had one of the largest drops in claims, Bob Mercer of the Muskingum County Opportunity Center says he has seen no major change in the amount of people looking for jobs.

“We have had one big major closing with Lear, but Licking County and Franklin County they have some major closures, so our situation at the office has not changed a lot. We average about 1900 people a month and as I mentioned to you, July was right around 2400 so it was up a little bit,” tells Bob Mercer a Supervisor at the Muskingum County Opportunity Center

Mercer says they are busy at the office and optimistic things will get better. His advice is to get started on your job search early and never wait.

“What we are seeing now is people starting earlier on their job search instead of waiting a few weeks. They realize that there is pretty good competition out there,” says Mercer

Anyone is welcome to drop by the Muskingum County Opportunity Center. It is located at 503 Main Street in Zanesville.
