PHILO, Ohio-The old Philo bridge was demolished this morning in front of a crowd of onlookers.

Half of the bridge was already demolished last week. Superintendent of the demolition Dale Lashley tells us more about the process.

“We have to dismantle a portion of it so we are within the restrictions of the DNR requirements, which is no concrete debris or anything in the river. We try to capture all that on a causeway which we have underneath the structure. At that point we enlisted the help of a professional blasting team.” , Lashley said of the process.

The newly demolished portions have been prepared for demolition for several days. Explosive charges were placed in drilled out portions of the concrete structures. Cleanup will be a relatively quick process.

“We’ve demoed two of the spans out of the four that we’re gonna do, and we had about fourteen hours of sheer work, which consisted of cutting the structural members up so we could put them in a container. Then the rest of the cleanup took another day.”, Lashley continued.

A final landlocked portion of the bridge will be demolished by crane at a later date.
