Pipe and Heat Insulation Options

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Upcoming temperatures are expected to be extremely low, and it’s important for home owners to protect their pipes and keep their homes warm.
We spoke with Sunrise Do It Center in Zanesville on the different options residents have to insulate their homes and protect pipes. Applying heat tape to pipes can prevent them from freezing and bursting. Fiberglass wrap insulation is an easy fit around pipes, and is an appealing choice for home insulation because it poses no fire hazard.
“There’s a lot of variety for heat insulation. You’ve got a foam insulation, you’ve got fiber glass insulation you can wrap the pipe with.” said Manager of Sunrise Do It Center, Dennis Baldwin.
“You’ve got the heat tape, it gives you heat to keep it from freezing. The insulation, the wrap insulation, helps to keep the pipes water, makes it easier for the heat tape to do its job,” he added.
Space heaters are also available at the Do It Center, but use extra caution for these heaters by placing them on hard, level surfaces away from flammables. If drafts are a problem in your home, apply weatherstrips or window insulation kits.
“If you got bad windows you could use window kits. Which is similar to a heat shrink, but you put it on then put a hair dryer on it and shrink it a little bit. Make it a nice, tight fit. Make sure all your cracks around your windows and doors are sealed well. Make sure everything is insulated well. If it’s cold and windy it’s going to find a way in,” Baldwin said.
Always remember appliances will be working overtime to keep residences warm when temperatures drop. But these insulation products can be found at Sunrise Do It Center or any hardware store.
