Pothole Repairs During Dry Weather

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The break in wet weather and cold temperatures are giving road crews the opportunity to hit the streets and repair the potholes creating problems for drivers.

Hitting potholes can do damage to your vehicle whether it’s your tires, wheels, or suspension and steering. Zanesville street crews are spending the day patching the potholes. Superintendent of Zanesville Street and Sanitation, Jeff Shook, said freezing and thawing of the surface causes potholes to “pop out.” He said they try to keep up with them the best they can. They work on the main roads first, then move into the residential streets, and alleys last.

“Some places where there’s a lot of traffic hits them and causes them to get big quick. Especially when they pop out like at night, and there’s so much traffic that goes on. We try to stay on top of them as best we can and keep them filled,” Shook said.

There are at least three crews out patching the potholes everyday provided that the weather is clear. Shook said there is a process to repatching them.

“We try to get all the water out of it at first. Try to dry it up, the hole the best we can. And then we’ll put the patch material in, and then we’ll run over it with the truck to compact it in,” he mentioned.

Shook advises drivers to be cautious and slow down during pothole season. Drivers can report potholes by calling the Street Department or by filling out a form on their website. The Street Department will fill them as soon as possible.
