Practicing Safety at Safety Town

For the next couple weeks, kids will practice safety tips at Safety Town.

The annual Safety Town opened at Coburn United Methodist Church Monday morning and dozens of kids romped through the mini city. Safety Town program director, Bethany Schiele, said kids learn many different safety practices while at Safety Town.

“It’s kind of a supplement to school and preschool programs,” she said. “There are so many things that you have to teach kids in school, and sometimes safety things kind of get pushed by the wayside. We kind of focus on all the things that maybe you don’t get an opportunity to teach them in school.”

Kids will return all week to continue the lesson. Part of the training they receive involves sharing the road while on a bike. The program also aims to teach kids to be cautious of strangers.

“There are so many things that we need to worry about and be afraid of, so if we just take the time and teach them to stop and look before they cross the street and be cautious of people they don’t know,” she said that will go a long way to making kids safer.

The camp continues for the next couple of weeks, and Schiele said if you want your kids to attend, there are a limited number of spots left. As the program is provided by the Carr Center, you can visit www.carrcenter.org to sign up.
