Proposed Tobacco Ban on College Campuses
A new push by the state Board of Regents is looking to eliminate the use of tobacco products on public college campuses.
Ohio Board of Regents Chairman James Tuschman recently told the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper about his plans to introduce a resolution that would ban all types of tobacco products.
Zane State College Dean Barb Shelby said while the idea may not be popular with all students, the plan is feasible for the college.
"We see it as part of our mission I believe to help people grow and having them grow in better health seems to go hand-in-hand with education," said Shelby.
Shelby said all of the buildings on the Zane State campus are smoke free.
While Zane State College has no official stance on the proposed measure, the idea has been brought up in the past.
"It’s certainly come up in conversations in different committees. Our safety and security committee has spoken about it. It’s come in meetings as high as the president’s cabinet, but there has been lots of concern about how it would happen," added Shelby.
Miami and Cedarville universities in Ohio already have bans in place regarding the use of tobacco products.
