Repairing Stained Glass

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Downtown Zanesville has a variety of historic churches that add to the splendor of the community through their distinct architecture.

The Market Street Baptist Church, located along 6th Street, donates its grandeur to the community through its stained glass windows. Property Chairman Alan Wilson explained the significance of the windows along with steps being taken to maintain the glass.

“We understand this is the largest collection of Tiffany Wavy Glass Windows east of the Mississippi,” Wilson said. “That may or may not be correct. That’s what we’ve been told. The stained glass window’s life expectancy is about a hundred years. So we’re about 70 years past that. Just the weather and the deterioration of time, they have to be rebuilt.”

The two largest windows are currently being disassembled and will be shipped to Scottish Stained Glass, in Arizona, where they will be refurbished.

“Tiffany is a New York company and Tiffany was… and I’m sure that everyone has heard of Tiffany Lamps and all that. And anything with Tiffany, it was an artist style and they employed some of the best craftsmen in the world. And they’re known throughout the world,” Wilson said.

The process to refurbish the windows takes around 6 months and they hope to have them reinstalled before their 190th anniversary celebration that will take place in May.
