Sales Tax Holiday Well Received
Ohio’s very first sales tax holiday came to a close Aug. 9 and local shoppers said they definitely enjoyed the weekend of savings.
“This is our third trip to staples this weekend,” said teacher and parent Christine Hampp. “We’ve come every day and we’ve saved 30 dollars so far. ”
“I’ve been in other states at certain times on vacation where that has been going on when we’ve been there so we’ve taken advantage of there as well so it’s nice that they’re bringing it to Ohio,” said parent Cheryl West.
“I went and got clothes yesterday so that was great because I needed new clothes because I go back to school soon and then I’m getting schools supplies today,” said student Jessica Savage.
With their lists in hand, shoppers rushed local stores to get everything they need at the discounted rate. Store employees said they noticed a boost in sales.
“Oh we have,” said Staples Supervisor Kerrie Taylor. “It’s got to be booming because we’ve never had so many people in the store. I had 20 people at the door before I even opened the doors today.”
While this was the first tax holiday in the buckeye state, it exists in other states around the country. A bill was passed in Ohio last year to create the one time holiday this weekend. There’s no word on if it will become a reoccurring event.
